PCI Data Security Standard Requirements

Protect Cardholder Data
3. Protect stored cardholder data
4. Encrypt transmission of cardholder data across open, public networks

6. Develop and maintain secure systems and applications

These high-level requirements are divided into approximately 225 sub-requirements. All merchants and service providers are obligated to meet every requirement, unless the requirement is not applicable. On the other hand validation and assessment of the requirements will vary from one organization to the other.
